More than 30 years' experience competing internationally at the Professional level. Graded A Piobaireachd and Light Music by CPA when active.

Winner of PPBSO Champion Supreme Piobaireachd three consecutive years. Won the Silver Medal (1984) and B-Grade S&R (2001) and second in the Open Jigs (1985) at the Northern Meeting, Inverness. Winner of Piobaireachd Society (Canada) Gold Medal, Maxville, 2000. Dozens of professional / open / senior solo prizes in Scotland, Canada and USA over career.

Member of Grade 1 Polkemmet Pipe Band, Scotland, 1983-1987, and final year as pipe-sergeant. Member of 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band 1988-1997. Member of Grade 1 Spirit of Scotland 2008, 2016.
Regular pupil of Andrew Wright (piobaireachd) and Captain John MacLellan (light music), 1983-1988. Occasional instruction from James McIntosh, Jack Taylor, Bill Livingstone and Jim McGillivray.

Two studio recordings for BBC Radio Scotland's Pipeline with Iain MacInnes and Gary West. Played on four pipe band recordings with various bands.
