Biography
Dan Bist was born in Victoria, BC, Canada. He has played snare drum for more than 40 years. As a composer of scores for snare, voiced midsection, and pipes, he brings playing experience on all pipe band instruments to his instructional sessions. He is passionate about ensemble!
Dan’s “official” instructors along the way have included his father Harvey Bist, Phil MacMillan of the Powell River Clansmen, Sheila Annan of Shotts and Dykehead / City of Victoria, and John Fisher. Unofficially, he still learns something from every lead drummer, corps member, and pipe major he encounters.
Dan has performed and competed with bands at all grade levels during his playing career. He was a member of the 2007 Grade 1 World Champion Drum Corps under lead drummer Drew Duthart, a member of the 2008 Grade 2 North American Champion Drum Corps under lead drummer Graham Kirkwood, the Lead Drummer of the 2011 Grade 3 PPBSO Champion Supreme drum corps, and a solo finalist in the Gold Medal contest at MHAF Winter Storm in 2011.
During the 2009 competition season, Dan achieved a unique "quadruple crown"…he has officially competed on the competition field as a piper, a snare drummer, a bass drummer and [finally] a tenor drummer.
Dan is an active adjudicator with the Pipers and Pipe Band Society of Ontario (PPBSO) for both Drumming (since 2009) and Ensemble (since 2015), and was a member of the PPBSO Music Committee from 2011 to 2015.
Dan works as an IT Project Manager Consultant, and lives in Barrie, Ontario, Canada, with his wife Jenn.
