Celebrating Our Incredible Pipe Band Moms This Mother’s Day

In the world of pipe bands, there’s one group of people who rarely ask for recognition, yet somehow keep everything running smoothly from the sidelines… the Pipe Band Moms.

They’re the ones standing at the edge of the competition circle or quietly off to the side during solos. They’re often seen pulling a wagon overflowing with pipes or drums as well as lawn chairs, and enough snacks to feed half the band, just in case someone forgot to pack a lunch.

Pipe Band Moms are experts in the details that matter most. They make sure your kilt doesn't wrinkle, you have both flashes, and that you've checked in with your steward.

They spend long days at highland games sitting in the blazing summer sun, or bundled in blankets when the weather turns cold, knowing that by the end of the day their shoes will be covered in dust or soaked through with mud. Yet, competition after competition, they continue to show up without hesitation.

And some Pipe Band Moms manage to do all of this while competing themselves. Somehow, they balance being both performer and supporter at the very same time. And if you’re especially fortunate, your Pipe Band Mom might also be your solo accompanist, offering a reassuring smile and steady nerves in those final moments before you step in front of the judge.

But what makes Pipe Band Moms truly special isn’t just the rides to practice or the emergency sunscreen and earplug reminders. They’re there after the big wins, celebrating every success as if it were their own and after the difficult performances, reminding you that one rough play doesn’t define you as a musician.

To all the amazing Pipe Band Moms out there, we want to wish you all a happy, well-deserved Mother’s Day. Thank you for everything you do!

And for those who don’t have a Pipe Band Mom of their own, don’t worry. Spend enough time around the games this summer, and you’ll soon be adopted by one, usually just in time for a snack, a last-minute uniform fix, and a reminder to put on sunscreen before you head into the circle.

Happy Mother’s Day!
