History & Archives: The 1950s Toronto Indoor Games

In recognition of Saturday's Toronto Indoor Games at Moss Park Armouries, the History & Archives committee of The Pipers' & Pipe Band Society of Ontario is happy to pass along scans of pages of games past. These pages range from 1952 to 1957.

  1. Top row, far left: 1952 games, events and prize money (note, $15 dollars in 1952 is worth $169 in 2024 dollars)

  2. Top row, middle: rules from 1952. At this time the PPBSO was known simply as The Pipers' Society of Ontario

  3. Top row, far right: 1953 games program. Note the point breakdown and that "dress & deportment" was considered in the awarding of points and prizes.

  4. Middle row, far left: cover from 1953 games program. Held on Valentine's Day!

  5. Middle row, middle: 1957, Junior piping and quartet entrants. Note "A. Dewar" (Sandy Dewar) and Billy Gilmour's brother, Ken.

  6. Middle row, far right: 1957 "Open March" competitors. A very large entry with many well-known names. The quality of this event would be very high.

  7. Bottom row, far left: 1957 "Open Snare Drumming" competitors - 10 entrants. A very healthy number; "Marches over 16 and under 21"; grading was still to be introduced.

  8. Bottom row, middle: 1957 "Open Piobaireachd" competitors - 19! $20 in 1957 is the equivalent to $215 in 2024 money.

Good luck to The Toronto Branch of the PPBSO for another great edition of the historic Toronto Indoor Games and all the best to all competitors!
